For assignment 3 I want to focus on but I feel the need to explore something that I am passionate about as this is a very personal project. I have decided to focus on human trafficking, human trafficking is happening constantly and is one the one of the major world issues which often gets dismissed. With the scale of this issue, I would like to explore the scale that this is happening and why it gets covered up and forgotten about by international media.

Human trafficking is a $32 billion annual industry. Roughly 35 million people worldwide are stuck in the sprawling nightmare of human trafficking at any given moment. Victims can be trafficked for labor purposes. They can be trafficked into industries such as fishing and textile. On possibly the evilest spectrum of this problem, victims can also be used for sexual exploitation in the commercial sex industry.

Human trafficking is one of the most profitable criminal activities in the world. There’s speculation that it could become the most profitable activity in this category within the near future. Rescued victims have spanned from over 50 countries throughout the globe. Child victims of human trafficking are over twice as likely to develop serious mental health issues like clinical depression and personality disorders than their non-victimized counterparts.

Mirzoeff’s idea about what it means to be a citizen in this global era.

Mirzoeff explores the idea that many issues that occur around the world are usually confronted by people who oppose the political and social stance that organisations and parties in power may bring across. Mirzoeff shows examples of ways people visually activate these problems in a way that challenges the views that bring injustice. These visual expressions are rebellious movements which alter perspectives and bring change towards existing political and social stances.
